And then when I downgraded from FoM to regular membership, I got a letter from Tony thanking me for becoming a Medium member - they haven't even set up their systems to distinguish between [becoming regular member from previous non-member status] and [becoming regular member from FoM status].

It's very hard to take seriously a prominent tech company that makes such basic missteps in the logic behind its interaction with users.
