Your mention of the abandoned girl-next-door script got me thinking about Hepburn's Holly Golightly as an earlier - though rather different - example of the trope, and maybe even Monroe's Sugar Kane in Some Like It Hot.

Both of which also have mob involvement, curiously enough.
